As the year draws to a close, we reflect on an unforgettable 2024—both on and off the pitch. From senior championship success to the tireless work behind the scenes, the dedication of players, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors has propelled the club to new heights. In this December edition, we share highlights from the AGM, celebrate our achievements, and look ahead to an exciting 2025, which marks the club’s 20th anniversary. Let’s dive into the full roundup! ☘️
Senior Champions of 2024
The Seniors reached the pinnacle of their season, claiming the Capital Concrete Senior Football Championship title in October—a monumental achievement that put North London Shamrocks firmly on the GAA map. Chairman Keith Egan reflected on the team’s growth and success, crediting the efforts of Peter Witherow, his coaching staff, and the players for their dedication and buy-in throughout the season.
While the journey ended in a tough battle against Ballina Stephenites in Connacht, the team has now set a new benchmark, with a determination to build on this success for 2025. We can’t reiterate the importance of everyone’s involvement—on and off the pitch—to ensure that next season is even bigger.
Reserves: A Season of Promise
The Reserves showed real resilience and commitment this year, fielding teams for every fixture and avoiding any forfeits—a remarkable achievement given the challenges. Trips to Mitcham and Hazelwood reflected the squad’s dedication and the positivity from this campaign is something the club aims to carry into next season.
Keith highlighted the importance of youth progression, with Padraig Gaynor and James Gavaghan stepping up from the U17s this year. The goal for 2025? To explore the possibility of fielding a Junior team alongside the Reserves—a challenge, but one the club is ready to take on.
Girls Teams Roundup – A Year of Progress and Challenges
The North London Shamrocks Girls teams experienced a mixed year, with notable successes at U14 and U18 levels tempered by challenges in squad development for the younger age groups. From championship victories to representation at county level, 2024 showcased the talent and resilience of our girls while also highlighting key areas for future focus.
U14 & U18 Success Our U14s secured Plate victory in the London/Herts Championship, while the U18s delivered standout performances, reaching the All Britain Cup Final and winning the London Shield Championship with a dramatic last-kick victory over St Joseph’s. Several players also proudly represented NLS with the London U18s, demonstrating exceptional quality throughout the season.
Challenges in Younger Age Groups
Despite these achievements, the club faces challenges at U7, U9, and U11 levels, with low numbers limiting team progression. Without new players joining, fielding teams at U12 and U16 in future seasons remains uncertain. Addressing this will be a major priority moving forward.
Pathway to Senior Football
The transition of youth players to senior football with Holloway Gaels continues to develop, though areas for improvement have been identified. Discussions on structure, support, and integration will be essential to ensure our girls remain engaged and thrive at senior level.
With renewed efforts in recruitment and support, we’re confident the NLS Girls section will continue to grow stronger and build on the successes of 2024.
Youth Development: A Conveyor Belt of Talent
The youth teams continued to grow and thrive, with the U17s making their mark by progressing into the senior panel. However, Keith acknowledged the need to increase numbers, particularly on the girls’ side in younger age groups, and emphasized plans to bring the London CDA into schools early in 2025.
A huge thank you to the coaches and volunteers who make the youth system possible. Keith reiterated the need for more coaches next year, with a target of 1 coach for every 5-6 players. A heartfelt tribute was paid to Patrick Reynolds, an U7s coach who sadly passed away this year. Plans are in place to hold a Fun Day in his memory on 22nd March in partnership with Patrick’s club, Éire Óg.
Gratitude, Growth, and Goals for 2025
A heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors and supporters who have played such a vital role this year. Your contributions, whether through sponsorship, donations, or your time, ensure the continued success of the club both on and off the pitch.
Chairman Keith Egan summed up the year perfectly, reminding us that teamwork has been at the heart of all we’ve achieved:
“2024 has really put North London Shamrocks on the GAA map. Don’t be afraid to put yourself forward—whether helping with events, coaching youth teams, or lending a hand in any way. You have seen what we can achieve, and with your help, we can continue to grow stronger in 2025 and beyond.”
As we look forward to celebrating our milestone year, let’s build on the incredible foundation laid this season. Here’s to another year of teamwork, community, and success. #ShamrocksAbú ☘️
A Quick Word from your PRO
It’s been one hell of a year at the Shamrocks, and it’s been an absolute honour sharing the incredible work this club has been doing both on and off the pitch. From the weekly Shamrocks Scoop and social media updates to forgetting to post the final score on Twitter/X at the Senior Championship Final out of sheer nerves and excitement —every moment has been a privilege.
For me, it’s a gift to be part of this club and contribute in some small way now that the body doesn’t let me do it on the pitch! What we have here at North London Shamrocks is something truly special, built on the dedication of every single one of you—no matter how small the role.
After a year like this, I feel we’re just getting started on an incredible journey. The best years are still to come, and I can’t wait to see where we go next.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!
