From the seniors’ spirited performance in the Connacht Club SFC Quarter Final against Ballina Stephenites to a competitive friendly between our reserves and U17s showcasing the club’s depth, it’s been an eventful November. With the annual Race Night fast approaching and the Christmas Lotto draw just around the corner, there’s plenty to keep the Shamrocks spirit alive. Let’s dive into this week’s updates! ☘️
A Quick Look Back…
Shamrocks Fall Short Against Ballina Stephenites
Connacht Club SFC Quarter Final
9th November 2024 – McGovern Park-Ruislip – 13:30
North London Shamrocks 0-9 vs 0-15 Ballina Stephenites
Facing the reigning Mayo champions and 2005 All-Ireland Club winners, Ballina Stephenites, the Shamrocks knew they were in for a tough test. Ballina’s class was evident from the start, with Evan Regan quickly establishing control and scoring several sharp points. The Shamrocks, still shaking off a three-week layoff, found themselves 4-1 down early on.
A key moment came midway through the half when Brody’s short kickout helped the Shamrocks break through Ballina’s press. Ultan Boyle was fouled as he attempted a goal-bound shot, leading to a crucial free. Unfortunately, Michael Carroll’s effort narrowly missed, but the move injected much-needed confidence into the team.
Ciaran Diver brought the Shamrocks back into contention with a darting run and a well-taken point, and the midfield duo began to edge their matchups, keeping the game competitive. The halftime score left the Shamrocks trailing but still in the fight.
As the second half began, the toll of recent celebrations and lingering injuries became apparent. Ballina capitalized on Shamrocks’ slight dip in decision-making and extended their lead with precise finishing. The Shamrocks created further opportunities, including a couple of goal chances, but the Ballina defense and their goalkeeper held firm.
While a few soft frees awarded to Ballina added to Shamrocks’ frustrations, the team continued to battle valiantly, ensuring the final scoreline reflected a competitive contest. Despite the loss, there’s no shame in falling to a side brimming with Mayo county stars and championship pedigree.
The Shamrocks’ historic journey to the Connacht stage has been a testament to their heart, grit, and determination. They’ve proudly represented the club, and while this chapter ends, the future is bright. The team will regroup, learn, and be back stronger for another crack at Connacht.
Reserves Triumph Over U17s in Competitive Friendly
On the final day of youth training last Saturday, the Reserves and U17s clashed in an engaging and spirited friendly match at Tottenhall. Despite a number of U17 players bolstering the Reserve side, the younger team started stronger, showcasing excellent skill and determination.
Joe Donouzjian excelled on the half-forward line, while Theo Ritchie dominated in midfield, giving the U17s an early lead. Only the defensive heroics of Patrick Duffy and Eoin Danaher kept the margin manageable. Eventually, the Reserves found their footing, with fine scores from James O’Sullivan and Michael Quinn helping them reach parity. A late first-half goal and a couple of well-taken points allowed the Reserves to take control by halftime.
Half-Time Score:
Reserves 1-8
U17s 0-6
The second half started with a bang, as the U17s quickly scored 1-2—Sean Gaynor finishing brilliantly to bring the teams level. As tensions rose, the Reserves regained momentum through the energetic runs of Oran Hilley and John McDyer. The game remained competitive until a few key moments turned the tide.
First, JJ Thomson intercepted a kickout and came agonizingly close to scoring, hitting the side netting. Then, after being awarded a penalty, JJ unfortunately drove the shot wide, missing a chance to retake the lead. To add to their woes, a misplaced U17 kickout was capitalized on by the Reserves, who lobbed the ball into the net—a potential three-goal swing.
With time running out, the U17s pressed hard, leaving gaps at the back that the Reserves exploited with clinical finishing, including goals from Hilley and O’Sullivan. The referee upped the stakes by declaring “next score wins,” adding a dramatic edge to the final moments. A towering effort from 45 yards out sealed the Reserves’ victory.
Final Score:
Reserves 6-15
U17s 1-14
A big thank you to all who participated—it was a fantastic match that underscored the talent and camaraderie within the club. Special thanks to the management of both teams for refereeing and managing the game. This is the third edition of this friendly and is sure to remain a staple in the Shamrocks calendar.
